Giving Props to Other Diseases
It's important to recognize that multiple sclerosis research has benefitted greatly from other diseases.
Of course, the research from other neurological diseases is often directly or indirectly related to MS. By better understanding the nervous system, we come closer to therapies for neurolgical disorders, including multiple sclerosis. Some of these conditions include Parkison's Disease, ALS (Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, and Alzheimer's Disease
Since multiple sclerosis has the added bonus of being autoimmune as well, the other autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rhematoid arthritis and, most importantly, AIDS have helped us in understanding the immune system. AIDS has forced humanity to learn about the immune system, and thus has furthered research for many other diseases as well.
